Pagination for portfolio pages was support on the initial launch.
The particular customer you mentioned requested to have pagination for thumbnails created in a page using the shortcode. This is similar to the default wordpress gallery shortcode. Pagination for this is not implemented.
Portfolio items can have lightbox image/video or it can be displayed as a Linked thumbnail. Either one of the three. Lightbox image, Lightbox Video or Links.
In addition you can generate a Portfolio page with all of them having Direct Links without lightbox.
